It's not a Secret

In spite of rampant propaganda about the latest “health break-though” or the newly discovered “miracle food” there really is no mystery about what it takes to be healthy. Everything we need to know about how to live well and be healthy is readily available. I will grant you that the vast spectrum of choices can make things confusing and that marketing can be very persuasive but there are really only a few fundamentals. Would you like to know what they are?

Diet – This is by far the most important factor in your health. You generally don’t have to be precise about how you eat but you do need to the right combination of foods. If you’ve read any of my previous work, you will know that I advocate a low carb diet. That this is the best way to eat is not my opinion, it’s based on research that is readily available and you can find out for yourself that this is true.

Exercise – I don’t need to tell you that exercise is important, it’s obvious that we were made to move. What I may need to suggest is that we don’t need to be boot camp all-stars! A lifestyle of activity is best rather than a sedentary lifestyle punctuated by bursts of high intensity activity. Find ways to watch less tv and generally move around more. By the way, don’t get fooled by the unsubstantiated notion that you need to exercise to lose weight. Exercise is essential but it doesn’t help you lose weight. If you want to trim down, see point number one.

Rest – Here is an overlooked health habit. That our bodies need rest is an irrefutable fact. It is also a fact that most of us don’t get enough. Resting is a time for our body to recover and repair itself. If we deny ourselves rest, we are inviting eventual breakdown.

Relationship – Someone once said that if you can find a good wife you’ll be a happy man. If not, you’ll become a philosopher! At the end of your days on earth won’t the quality of your relationships trump everything else in life? Do they warrant more attention and care than most of us currently give them?

Nervous system function – Your nervous system is the master control system of your body. If it’s not healthy, you won’t be. You must attend to your brain and spine so that all the complicated parts of you can work in harmony. Much of what we’ve mentioned so far will help and, of course, chiropractic is best suited to help you deal with any problems in this area. You knew I’d fit chiropractic in here somewhere!

Soul Care – Here’s another reality; we all have a soul. That is, a part of us that integrates all the other parts of us together. And it needs to be attended to. We are not merely physical beings that happen to be conscious but spiritual beings that happen to be currently housed in a physical body. Our soul, therefore needs nurturing and we can’t be truly healthy unless we care for it.

Can you see that if you have this understanding of health, the latest miracle drug or health product really has no power to make us healthy? Your health is, in large measure, a result of the choices you make in these six areas.

Which of these fundamental areas needs the most attention in your life?
