Update on my Low Carb Experiment

I started eating a low carb diet a little over 2 months ago and have noticed some interesting changes that seem consistent with the what the research suggests.

1. Much less hunger – I don’t get hungry now unless I’m hungry, if you know what I mean. In the past, even directly after a meal, I was still hungry for something. Now, when I’m done eating, I’m satisfied. It’s a nice feeling.

2. More energy – The real problem with eating too many carbs was that my cells were becoming insulin resistant which meant that they were not getting the fuel they needed, hence the fatigue. Switching to more of a fat metabolism means that my cells are now getting the fuel they need and as a consequence I have more energy. I will say that the first few weeks weren’t fun. Energy was low and grumpiness was high.

3. Better skin – This has always been a problem for me but with fewer carbs and more fat my skin is much less dry and generally feels better. I’ve also noticed that a couple skin bumps on my face have disappeared. Interesting! This is because skin cells need fat as protection. I guess they are getting more of it now.

4. Teeth – I don’t want to brag but I’ve got healthy teeth and don’t have a single filling in my mouth. I do, however, get a little plaque. Since I’ve been watching my carbs I’ve have two separate occasions where plaque has spontaneously fallen off. I don’t even know how to explain that but it’s kind of cool.

5. Not as Fat – I never checked how much I weighed before so I don’t really know how much weight I’ve lost but I would guess it’s between 15-20 pounds. I do know that my pants are too loose now and the pair I bought two weeks ago is a size smaller than usual.

After the reading I’ve done and the personal experience, I am convinced that a low carb diet is the way to go. There’s nothing complicated about it and it is sustainable. That’s not to say there aren’t moments when overloading on carbs isn’t tempting (read ice-cream) but on the whole, the rewards for eating this way are tangible, quick to manifest, and worth it.

What experience have you had on a low carb diet?
